If you love Hidden Mickeys as much as we do, here’s one that might just be the most magical of them all — and it only appears once a year. It’s the kind of Disney detail that reminds you just how much thought and pixie dust goes into everything at Walt Disney World.
Each year on November 18th, Mickey Mouse’s official birthday, something special happens in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. A Hidden Mickey — perfectly formed by light and shadow — appears on the wall inside Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid.
Yes, you read that right. A Hidden Mickey made from sunlight.
Here’s how it works: Just outside the queue of the Little Mermaid attraction, you’ll pass through a detailed rock and cavern-style area. Around mid-morning, if the sun is out, a beam of light shines just right through an opening, casting the familiar shape of Mickey’s head and ears on the wall. It only happens on Mickey’s birthday, thanks to precise Imagineering and the natural angle of the sun.
Disney Imagineers actually designed this intentionally — like a solar calendar that celebrates the mouse that started it all. Talk about a hidden tribute!
It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, and timing and weather matter. But for Disney fans in the know, seeing this once-a-year Hidden Mickey feels like discovering a secret moment between Walt’s legacy and the present day.
So if you’re visiting Magic Kingdom on November 18th, make time to swing by the queue for The Little Mermaid ride and look closely. You just might catch a glimpse of one of Disney’s most magical Easter eggs.
And when you do — don’t forget to wish Mickey a happy birthday!
